After finishing my A-Levels, the pressure was on. Everyone I knew was applying to university, but I knew this didn’t suit me. I wanted to start working and earning, so I decided to look at an apprenticeship. My first attempt, a Trainee Quantity Surveyor wasn’t suited to me. I left after just a few weeks and ended up working in retail for a month whilst looking for my next role.
I came across an apprenticeship opportunity with SN Financial Services through a Facebook ad. At the time, I hadn’t really thought about a career in finance, so I did some research. The more I read, the more it appealed to me: a role that combined working with numbers and supporting people. I decided to apply and was invited to interview.
Finding the Right Fit
During the interview, the team at SN were very welcoming. They made it clear that they had a solid apprenticeship program and that they would support me every step of the way. Hearing they had a qualified adviser who had started as an apprentice with no experience really sealed the deal for me. With a clear pathway from financial services administration to paraplanning, I felt confident that this was the right place to be.
I started my apprenticeship in October 2023 as a Financial Services Administrator; this role was comprised of varying tasks from greeting clients and booking meetings to helping with basic review tasks and administering data. Moving through the role I began to work more on the technical aspects, compiling research and more developed reports.
One of the best parts has been getting to meet with representatives from some of the biggest investment platforms. It’s been a great way to learn about the industry and network with professionals.
Earning While I’m Learning
The support I’ve received from SN Financial has been amazing. In April 2024, I passed my first qualification, RO1 (Financial Services, Regulation & Ethics), and by February 2025, I had completed my full course with a distinction. I then enrolled on the CII Certificate in Paraplanning in March 2025 and by the end of May I had passed my next exam. I’m now working on the final two assessments to become a qualified Paraplanner, whilst learning the technical skills required in real life situations.
One of the best things about an apprenticeship is the earn while you learn aspect. You get to build a career and become financially independent at the same time. I’ve even learned a ton about my own finances.
A Rewarding Experience
This whole experience has shown me that an apprenticeship can be a brilliant alternative to university. You’re able to put what you’re learning into practice straight away, and the flexibility makes a huge difference. If work is particularly busy, or you’ve got other commitments like a holiday, you can schedule exams for when it works best for you.
I have since been shortlisted for the CII Financial Services Administrator Apprentice of the Year 2025. Out of a large number of applicants, I’m honoured to have been named as one of the finalists. Mid October, I will be travelling to London with my manager to attend the black-tie awards ceremony.
Regardless of the outcome, I am proud to be recognised in this way and grateful for the support of my colleagues. This experience reinforces my belief that, with the right environment and commitment, an apprenticeship can provide an outstanding pathway to professional success.
Have you ever considered where an apprenticeship might take you?
