Time is Never Different – a market commentary from SN Financial

Market Update; Tariffs, Tension, and Perspective

There’s been a lot of noise recently around the US imposing fresh tariffs and the ripple effects we’re seeing across global stock markets. Markets don’t like uncertainty, so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a bit of volatility.

At the time of writing, 7th April 2025, global stock markets have seen the following movements Year to Date:

S&P 500, the largest 500 companies in the US: Down 13.54%
FTSE 100, the largest 100 companies in the UK: Down 2.48%
Euro Stoxx 600, Down 2.81%

With the volatility that we’re seeing today, it’s likely to be ending the day even lower than the figures above.

But here’s the thing: this isn’t new.

Political tension, economic posturing, market dips—they’re all part of the cycle. And while the media might shout “Yeah, but this time it’s different!“, history tells a very different story.

Global stock markets have recovered 100% of the time.
Every crash, correction, crisis, or dip.
Every “once-in-a-generation” event.
Every “unprecedented” moment.
Every. Single. Time.

As investors, we can’t control the headlines. But we can control how we respond.
That’s exactly why we work closely with our clients to build financial plans that are designed to weather times like these.

We don’t just hope things go well – we prepare for when they don’t.

By understanding your lifestyle goals and your time horizons, we can create a plan that gives you the confidence to stay the course — even when markets deliver some painful moments. Because when you know you’ve planned for uncertainty, it becomes a lot easier to tune out the noise.

That’s why we focus on planning—not prediction. It’s why we build diversified portfolios aligned with your long-term goals, not with the latest news cycle. And it’s why we remind ourselves that while market declines are temporary, the advance is permanent.

So to summarise…
If the recent headlines have made you nervous, that’s okay!
You’re human!
But just remember: your financial plan is built to weather storms like this—and come out stronger on the other side.
If you’d like to chat about how this impacts your personal plan, we’re always here.
